iMDsoft Launches MetaVision SafeTrack

MDsoft® has announced the release of MetaVision SafeTrack™, its new mobile electronic observation solution.  The solution automates Modified Early Warning Scores (MEWS) calculations, nursing assessments and escalations, ensuring timely intervention for patient deterioration

Electronic observation systems have been proven to reduce length of stay and increase clinical attendance to patients.  Additionally, digital recording of early warning scores is faster and more accurate.

Hospitals using MetaVision SafeTrack will enjoy all the advantages of a mobile electronic observation solution.  Nurses will no longer manually document vital signs and observations, eliminating the issues associated with paper charting, such as illegibility and risk of error.

The solution calculates all the NHS early warning scores, supporting different departments.  Scores can be adjusted for individual patients as the need arises.  The system provides smart alerts and nursing assessments for sepsis, AKI, VTE and more.  The rule-based engine incorporates observations with other information such as lab results as soon as they are available, which helps identify patients at risk for dangerous conditions, independent of the bedside clinician.

Escalation paths help rescue patients from possible deterioration and provide the relevant caregivers with real-time clinical and location information.  Doctors, senior nurses, administrators, and outreach teams define which patients and data they need to access. Hospital management can use the system to generate reports needed for studying key performance indicators such as escalations and EWS per department.

Hospitals determine which scores, smart alerts and reports are most beneficial for their requirements.  Integration with bedside devices in high acuity settings and hospital information systems such as PAS and Electronic Patient Records (EPR) makes this a suitable solution for hospitals looking to complement their existing IT infrastructure with an electronic observation system.

Based on the MetaVision EPR platform, MetaVision SafeTrack is able to expand to meet changing requirements.  The solution can grow to include additional functionality such as nursing documentation, doctor documentation and medication management, all the way to a hospital-wide electronic patient record.

“The introduction of MetaVision SafeTrack is the next natural step in our commitment to helping provide better care for critical patients across the hospital,” said Lars-Oluf Nielsen, CEO of iMDsoft.

“Our expertise in high acuity environments and data integration has paved the way for this innovative solution."

MetaVision SafeTrack was presented at ANZICS in Auckland in October.

Clinical Studies using Masimo Technologies presented at the American

Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting

Two new studies using Masimo technologies were presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting in San Diego, California in October.  The conference is the largest gathering of anesthesiologists in the world.

The first study evaluated the EMMA portable capnometer in children under general anesthesia

In a study of 13 children (average age 18 months) undergoing surgery, Dr. Yuko Nawa and colleagues from the Hokkaido Medical Center for Child Health and Rehabilitation in Sapporo, Japan, compared the end tidal carbon dioxide values (EtCO2) from the Masimo EMMA portable capnometer and traditional side stream capnography (GE Patient Monitor).

Compared to side stream capnography, the EMMA had 95% limits of agreement of -1.3 to 2.5 mm Hg, leading the investigators to conclude that the EMMA has “good correlation with side stream type capnometer in children” and “may be useful for general anesthesia in out-of-operating room or in case of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bedside respiratory care and patient transportation.”

The second study evaluated pleth variability index in spontaneously breathing adults during regional anesthesia.

In a study of 42 spontaneously breathing patients under regional anesthesia, Dr. Makoto Sato and colleagues from Asahikawa Medical University in Hoikkado, Japan evaluated the association of baseline pleth variability index (PVI) from Masimo SET® pulse oximetry and dexmedetomidine-induced changes in blood pressure.

Dexmedetomidine is an intravenous drug used to sedate patients during surgery which can also cause hypertension or hypotension that may increase patient risk.

A baseline PVI≤15 had a 94% sensitivity, 85% specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.93 (p=0.00002) for resulting hypertension.  A baseline PVI≥16 had an 83% sensitivity, 64% specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.79 (p=0.0008) for resulting hypotension.  The investigators concluded, “PVI can predict dexmedetomidine-induced changes in blood pressure in spontaneously breathing patients.”

"We are excited to partner with Vigilant Biosciences to bring this exciting new technology to patients in New Zealand," said Ross Gunn, Director, Crown Dental + Medical Limited.
"The ability to assess the risk of oral cancer earlier, before it has progressed to a later stage, will help us save lives.  The system is easy to use and easy to integrate into a standard dental practice, making it a valuable new tool in our arsenal to fight this disease."
In a recent study, published in April 2015, University of Auckland scientists revealed a "rapid rise" in diagnoses for oropharyngeal cancer – a type of mouth cancer – in New Zealand men aged 40 and over.  Additionally, according to the New Zealand Ministry of Health, more than 600,000 people in New Zealand use tobacco, and over 550,000 are heavy drinkers – both key risk factors for oral cancer.
"We are pleased to announce the agreement with Crown Dental + Medical for the sale of our OncAlert System in New Zealand," said Matthew H.J. Kim, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Vigilant Biosciences, Inc.
"New Zealand is among the many countries that have seen a rise in oral cancer rates in recent years, and new tools to help assess risk and diagnose early are critical to reversing this trend.  Through our partnership with Crown Dental + Medical, our goal is to provide innovative, accurate and cost-effective products that will result in earlier detection and intervention for patients."

Terumo BCT: raising awareness of apheresis medicine.

Terumo BCT has made two grants of $10,000 to fund education to raise the awareness and understanding of apheresis medicine.

Apheresisinvolves removing whole blood from a donor or patient and separating the blood into individual components so that one particular component can be removed.  The remaining blood components then are re-introduced back into the bloodstream of the patient or donor.

Terumo BCT is a global leader in blood component, therapeutic apheresis and cellular technologies, is the only company with the unique combination of apheresis collections, manual and automated whole blood processing, and pathogen reduction.

It has granted $10,000 each to Garrett Booth, Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center of Nashville, Tennessee and Anthea Greenway, Paediatric Haematologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, Australia.

The grant recipients were chosen by an independent global grant committee:.

“The more we help support apheresis education, the more momentum these important therapies may have in healthcare.  Dr. Booth and Dr. Greenway have shown their pioneering spirits for greater impacts, and the whole applicant pool exceeded our expectations.  These initiatives could ultimately have a positive effect on patient care,” says Bob Sullivan, Vice President, Therapeutics, Terumo BCT.
